Electronic Instruments available on loan to schools from ACC

The electronics department at the Austin Community College Riverside campus has many surplus electronic instruments that they want to loan to area schools for use by teachers in their science and technology classes. The instruments are in excellent condition and great for demonstrating principles of electricity, electronics and physics. As of January 9, the instruments include 60 Tektronix oscilloscopes, 28 Tektronix function generators, 46 Tek power supplies, 2 frequency counters, and 13 Simson 260 multimeters.

PowerUp game from IBM launches

A new multiplayer video game from IBM Corp. encourages teenagers to save the planet by playing a video game - and learn science at the same time.

The online game, called PowerUp, is part of IBM's TryScience initiative. It will be rolled out at high schools around the country in the coming week as part of National Engineer's Week 2008, which begins tomorrow and runs until next Saturday.

Spanish language experiments

Many ZOOM into Engineering (elementary and middle school level) experiments are available in Spanish in addition to English. See http://pbskids.org/zoom/printables/activities/ and look for the ESP designation. This site provides handouts in PDF format that you can print out and take to the classroom. All of the instructions are included, just check and see what supplies you will need and your visit is practically planned! Some example are attached below.

Design Squad Introduction

Design Squad is a new PBS television show, outreach campaign, and Web site, premiering during EWeek 2007. Part reality competition, all engineering, and major fun, Design Squad features two teams of real high school kids who use their problem-solving skills to design, construct, and test engineering projects such as a machine that automatically makes pancakes, or motorizing a red wagon that can reach speeds up to 20mph. This material was presented at the initial training session. Additional information is contained in this Powerpoint presentation.

Our activities are grouped by age level.

Several of the activities are suitable for a large age span with background material and approach changing to suit the audience. We now have a few Spanish language activities for bilingual classes. These are also arranged by grade level.
