Card Structure


Grade Level:  Elementary School, 3rd-6th

Related classroom topics:  Civil Engineering, Force

Supplies Needed: 

Divide students into groups of 2-3.  Each group will need: 

·        3 – 3x5” index cards

·        6” of tape

Procedure: 

1.      Give each group 3 index cards and 6” of tape.

2.      Each team must work to build and test a structure made out of the given supplies. 

3.      The structure must hold as many books at least 6” off the surface. 

Extensions: 

Allow students to use more tape and more index cards to hold heavier books with their structure.

Hints/Tips:  You can cut, fold, or tear the given materials.  Structure must be free standing
