Sugar Cookie WafersFor the younger grades (1st -4th) Use the Intel book One Digital Day to show students pictures of how technology plays a part in many industries. They especially like the amusement park section, the farming section, and space sections. They're also pretty interested in home appliances as well. Use the chip kit to explain the manufacturing process and talk a little bit about what engineering is all about and what it takes to become an engineer (college, math, science, etc) Illustrate how they all have capabilities that could make them a good engineer. ActivityUse large sugar cookies (you'll need frosting, sprinkles, gel writers and other toppings), have the children start a manufacturing floor. Start with a cookie (handled properly so as not to damage it ... just like the importance of us not dropping wafers). The cookie represents the wafer. The next station would then layer on a topping of some sort and move it to the next station until the wafer is completed and ready to be cut into "chips" for eating!!! The kids absolutely love this and they really learn about what it takes to make a chip because it can tie in real well with the discussion. Thanks to Tammie Hertel in Arizona for providing this activity idea. |
