Rick McMaster Honored for Volunteer Service

Rick McMaster was honored by the Travis Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers at their annual banquet on February 21, 2004, as the Volunteer of the Year.

Dr. McMaster, an executive project manager at IBM, has 23 years career experience with the company. Currently, he is responsible for global initiatives in strategic outsourcing contract start-up and transition. Additional experience at IBM includes managing microprocessor design and semiconductor process development, working with customers to develop new semiconductor products,
and conducting company-wide technology assessments.

Rick was a Program Advisor to the Multichip Module Conference in 1996, served as a Participating Member of the Technical Working Group of the National Equipment Manufacturers Initiative from 1995 to 1996, was Program Chair for the Multichip Module Conference in 1995 and served on the Board of Directors of the International Electronic Packaging Society from 1992 to 1996.

Dr. McMaster has been involved in the local DiscoverE program which informs
students about various engineering careers for eight years and has led the local community efforts for the past seven years. Under his direction, the Central Texas program has grown to include more than 100 schools and several community events and reaches nearly 30,000 students and their families. This unique program draws more than 500 engineers from over 50 local businesses and several professional organizations and has become a model for efforts nationwide. In addition, local engineers have been instrumental in creating bilingual material and created an electronic handbook of age appropriate activities.

Rick is also part of a team that is implementing an integrated engineering outreach plan for IBM and part of the company's DiscoverE resource team. He
has served as a judge at Texas BEST (Boosting Science, Engineering and Technology) finals for three years. The last two he has been head judge for Presentations and the Special Award for Most Creative.

Dr. McMaster earned both a B.A. and an M.S. in physics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he is a distinguished alumnus. He holds a PhD. in physics from the University of Connecticut and membership in several honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Pi Sigma. He is certified by PMI as a project manager.
