The Travis Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers honored the local branches of 3M and IBM for their sustained efforts of the DiscoverEngineering program at the advent of National Engineers Week. Both 3M and IBM are key to the local program providing both financial support and volunteer hours. 3M was recognized for the sustained financial support of the Central Texas program through cash grants, donated material and event hosting. IBM was honored for the large number of engineers that regularly participate in school visits, science fair judging, science night events and community wide programs and for providing over-all leadership for the local effort.

The DiscoverEngineering program encourages engineers to visit classrooms to make students aware that not all engineers drive trains. Engineers lead hands-on activities in math and science and stress the importance of these subjects. They also discuss various engineering careers and the pervasiveness of engineering in every day life. This outreach was started in Central Texas in 1993 by 3M, IBM and Texas Instruments.
