Build a Box

Materials

Per team: paper, tape, rulers, rice or beans (optional)

Procedure

Have students work in groups or as individuals. Challenge students to make the largest  open box  they can from a single sheet of paper.

Students grades 1-4 can fill their box with rice or beans to compare  volume. Students grades 5-8 can determine volume mathematically.

Notes

This activity can be adapted for students grades 8-12 by introducing more variables.

  • Allow students to use scissors.
  • Do not specify the shape of the container.
  • Challenge students to design a container with the largest volume and  the smallest surface area.
