Activity Kits Available for Check-out

We have received a grant to acquire hands-on kits for loan to teachers and engineers. We recommend that you borrow a kit to try out before you commit to using it with students. Requests for kits are filled on a first come basis. To request a kit or other equipment please fill out the Activity Kit/Equipment Request Form.

Kits include:

  • 26 K’Nex Bridges kits to build different types and variations of bridges. The recommended grades are 3-5. Two students can work together on a structure. The designs are explained in pictures. Paragraphs about each bridge type are in English only. We have two teacher books to go with these kits.
  • 30 Elenco Snap Circuit 300 kits for students in grade 4 and higher. We have both English and Spanish versions of the instruction books. These electric devices will need AA batteries which we do not supply. Again the students can work in teams of two.
  • LEGO Mindstorm NXT. These are our most elaborate kits. We have only four of these robotic kits, which will require both AA batteries and a computer for programming the devices. The instruction manuals are pictorial but there is a lot of information about the components in English only. These kits are best used in a long term project or as pre-built demos. A robot cannot be built in a normal class period. Teams of two to four students can work on a project.
  • 2 Van de Graff generators available for check-out.

Electronic Equipment Available for Loan

The electronics department at the Austin Community College Riverside campus has many surplus electronic instruments that they want to loan to area schools for use by teachers in their science and technology classes. The instruments are in excellent condition and great for demonstrating principles of electricity, electronics and physics. As of January 9, the instruments include 60 Tektronix oscilloscopes, 28 Tektronix function generators, 46 Tek power supplies, 2 frequency counters, and 13 Simson 260 multimeters.
